How to Play Backroom Maker
Start in the editor, where the grid is your blueprint. Choose the wall or empty-space tool, then click or drag across tiles to shape corridors and rooms. Add lights to change the atmosphere, place a Smiler to create a threat, and select the spawn tool to choose where your run begins. Want a different-sized challenge? Open CONFIG and select a grid size, or use the resize tool to adjust individual tiles. When your layout is ready, click ENTER BACKROOMS to explore it in first person. On mobile, use the virtual joystick on the lower left to move and drag on the right side to look around. Keep moving when the Smiler gets close, and try to beat your survival time. Use EDIT MAZE to return to building, or reload the terminal after a capture.
Tips & Tricks for Backroom Maker
Make your first layout simple, with clear corridors and a spawn point you can recognize. Place lights near turns or landmarks so you can navigate without making the whole maze feel safe. Keep the Smiler away from your starting tile if you want time to learn the route, then move it closer for a tougher survival test. Watch your surroundings and keep changing direction when it pursues you; dead ends can leave you with nowhere to run. Try different fog and flicker settings to tune the tension, and save useful layouts with their level codes. When you want another quick challenge, browse fresh action game picks.
